I sit here clutching useless lists
And keys for doors that don't exist
I crack my teeth on pearls
I tear into the history
Show me what it means to me in this world
Yeah, in this world

'Cause I am due for a miracle
I'm waiting for a sign
I'll stare straight into the sun
And I won't close my eyes
'Till I understand or go blind

Character Name: Edward Elric
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist/Hagane no Renkinjutsushi
Age: 19

Physical Description:
Short and wiry at just under five foot five, Edward seems like an easy mark at first glance, but he's built like a small human battering ram and can be one when provoked, with muscles earned working and fighting hard. His dark blonde hair is hacked off into layers in front, a few shorter strands sticking wildly out but most of it parted and hanging loose around his face. In back, it's pulled into a ponytail that just brushes his shoulders. Ed's eyes are a striking light hazel-brown color, almost golden. He doesn't own a lot of clothes, but he swears by his patched old canvas breeches, held up by a sturdy leather belt; a pullover black shirt; and a pair of steel-soled and riveted leather boots. When circumstances require, he'll wrap up in an old brown trenchcoat as well.

His complexion is tan and smooth, often a bit sooty around the face and hands, but marred by a spread of mottled scar tissue across his right arm, upper torso, and shoulder, reaching as far as a few streaks up his neck and across his lower jaw on that side. The majority of it is hidden by his shirt. His right arm has been amputated halfway between wrist and elbow; he does, however, possess a prosthetic, a semi-pneumatic device that responds to muscle movement in the stump of his arm. It's a clumsy, slightly oversized thing, heavy and uncomfortable to wear, but it's capable of basic movement and gripping with its two jointed fingers and opposable thumb, and better than no hand at all. He can remove it easily for sleep or rest, with the release of a few bolts that keep it clamped firmly around his forearm.

Personality:
Edward is a young man irrevocably driven by a goal: starved for knowledge all his life, he longs to become a world-famous chemist and scientist, and well-off enough in the process to look after his beloved little brother, Alphonse. Being born the bastard son of a mining-town girl hasn't done much to advance his goals, but Edward is undauntable, spending every penny he can spare on books and materials to flesh out the sparse collection he carries with him. He's stubborn, intelligent, and hot-tempered, easily provoked into a shouting fit or even a physical attack by anyone foolish enough to mock his height and lightweight appearance. Once he sets his mind on something, he's determined to forge ahead toward it until he achieves it. To friends and enemies alike, he's smart-mouthed and outspoken; fiercely loyal when offered friendship, and glad to sock you in the face if you seem inclined to be asking for it; yet under the tough exterior is a hopeless soft-touch who hates to see others in pain.

A voracious reader and researcher, he's easily distracted from everyday practicality by new ideas or items that interest him, and given to disappearing into his research indefinitely until dragged out of it again by sharp reality (or his brother, or starvation). He has a stronger sense of right and wrong than is probably healthy for someone trying to survive in the city, but he's anything but a pacifist, and will freely throw himself into brawls for any excuse from righteous indignation to altruism to just sticking it to The Man. He dislikes showing "weaker" emotions like loneliness and sadness, finding them embarrassing, but is too emotional a person in every way to avoid the occasional outburst. He's never been separated from his younger brother, with whom he has a strong and close family bond, until now; and the emotional burden of that separation may eventually start to tell on him during his time in the city.

Strengths:
Ed is incredibly stubborn and determined, and a tough little cuss in a fight despite his size. He's genuinely smart, despite being mostly self-educated, and has a real talent for chemistry, especially explosives and fuels. He's also kinder than he lets on. His prosthetic is sturdy and good in a fight.

Weaknesses:
His intensity often causes Ed to forget the big picture in pursuit of a narrower goal. He can be downright shortsighted at times, hot-tempered and easily provoked. His injured arm is a physical weakness that hurts and hinders him, and the prosthetic is heavy and clumsy.

History:
The illegitimate offspring of a gentle young woman from a desert mining town, Edward's upbringing tilted the odds strongly against him from the time he was born. He powerfully resents his father, an upper class scientist of some sort who dallied with his mother for about three years before abandoning her, leaving behind nothing but memories and a scatter of old books and chemistry equipment. It was enough time to father both Edward and his gentle younger brother, Alphonse. The boys discovered their father's "other" leavings at a young age, and began experimenting in his old workshop to surprising success, to the delight of their mother. Unfortunately, they were still quite young when she died of a sudden illness.

Stricken with grief but determined to make their way in the world, the boys inspired a mix of pity and approval in old Pinako Rockbell, the local engineer and inventor. The old woman took them in and raised them, filling the empty nest left by her son and his wife, a pair of practicing doctors in the city who rarely visited with their young daughter. Encouraged by her approval, the boys continued to experiment with whatever components they could find around the town and the mines, their concoctions ranging from useful to downright volatile. Lack of supervision and recklessness ran rampant between them, finally coming to a head at age twelve when a carelessly mixed formula literally exploded in Ed's face, blowing him halfway across their workshop, badly burning him, and shattering his hand. The ruined limb had to be partly amputated. A remorseful Pinako nursed the boy back to health and contrived him the best prosthetic she could manage, an impressive piece of equipment, though no substitute for a real hand.

Edward's accident hasn't changed his goals; he's simply learned caution from it, to a degree. As he's grown older, the mining town has become more and more cramped for him, and he is desperate to find a place where he can realize his intellectual potential, complete his education, and have access to the materials he needs to become a real scientist. At nineteen, the pressure from his community to stop fooling around with beakers and burners and take his place in the mines with the other young men has forced his hand. Edward refuses to bury himself in the dirt to toil like a mole when he could be learning. Supported by his little brother, he has finally run away from home, stowing away aboard a train bound for Azhun...but not before promising his brother to earn enough money in the city to buy him a ticket and get him out of their hometown as well, so that they can be together again in Azhun.
